About
Jayme Hansen

Born and raised in the wild deserts of Eastern Oregon, multi-faceted designer and maker Jayme Hansen showed interest in sewing and fashion at age three. Surrounded by a family of stitchers and craft enthusiasts, she absorbed creativity and guidance from her mother and grandmothers. She watched them, learned from them, and repeated their techniques in her own ways. These themes of community education, collaboration, and intuitive channeling as a form of language and artistic expression have remained crucial to growing her life, work, and skill set.

From 1998-2000 Jayme studied fiber arts and surface design techniques at Southern Oregon University. When the program was cut, she transferred to study Art at Portland State University but retreated due to a lack of inspiration. She started a casual internship at a local millinery which led to a six year apprenticeship and mentorship with well known milliner, Dayna Pinkham. It is at the millinery where Jayme refined and further developed the extent of her sewing proficiency, patience in hand stitching and detail work.

Portland in the early 2000’s was a perfect time and place to explore and get weird. Jayme worked at independent designer boutique, Seaplane where she also sold her designs: hats, original fashions, and re-worked vintage under the label Birds of Prey. Seasonal fashion shows were a tremendous inspiration, always experimental and performative, on one occasion employing models to execute a tragic double suicide in the vein of Romeo and Juliet, red ribbons as blood. Another displayed rear cut-outs and butt cleavage with a middle school cafeteria theme, passing notes and slapping asses.

The runways carved a direct path to the stage but instead of behind the scenes, Jayme was summoned to the spotlight along with her best friends and artistic collaborators in a project they named FLESHTONE. During twelve consecutive monthly shows at Portland venue, Holocene, they fearlessly developed the radical story of FLESHTONE in front of a live audience. Their productions featured live music, stage magic, multiple costume changes, choreographed dance and pounds of glitter and spandex. In 2006 they performed the twenty-one song electro-rock opera at PICA’s TBA festival.

It was around this time (2005-06) Jayme’s artwork transformed into paid work. She began styling wardrobe for commercials, often doing hair and makeup as well. Local animation studio, Bent Image Lab hired her to make miniature costumes for stop motion puppets and after 13 years she still holds a place on their freelance roster. Custom commissions for everything from dance costumes to large scale mascots to bowties started back then and continue to come her way to this day.

After over ten years of working as a fashion designer, commercial stylist and miniature costume designer by day (always a bartender by night), she applied to the local union and was hired as an On Set Costumer for Portlandia Season 5 in 2014. Jayme quickly shifted her focus to TV and Film, moving up to Assistant Costume Designer for Portlandia seasons 6-8, celebrating an Emmy nomination for her work in season 7. Indie films were a natural next step starting with a key costumer credit for Jeremy Sauliner’s 2014 Green Room, as Costume Supervisor in 2016 Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner Macon Blair’s I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore. Her recent film work includes: Costume Designer in 2019 Tribeca feature Clementine, Costume Supervisor in Kelly Reichardt’s anticipated new feature, First Cow and Key Costumer for Dave Franco’s upcoming directorial debut, The Rental.
